Can you write on a rupee note?
The American version of this game, Where's George?, has spread since 1998 because players write the site's name in the margin of every bill they entered. People ask whether they should do the same here. Short answer: we don't ask you to, and the RBI would rather you didn't.
Is it illegal to write on a note? What the RBI says
The Clean Note Policy is the RBI's long-running effort to keep the notes in circulation clean and intact. It tells banks not to staple notes and to sort out soiled ones, and its public campaigns ask people not to write on them. The instructions to banks are explicit: notes with "slogans, political or religious messages, scribbling, stain" are unfit for circulation, and a disfigured note can be refused under the refund rules. Writing on a note isn't a crime, but it is something the RBI keeps asking people to stop doing.
Will a bank accept a note with writing on it?
A note with a stray pen mark is still legal tender and almost always accepted. Two things change once it is marked:
- A note carrying a political or religious slogan is classed as unfit, and a bank can decline to exchange it.
- If the note is later torn or damaged, its refund at the bank is decided under the RBI Note Refund Rules, 2009 (amended 2018). Writing on it doesn't help that case.
So the trade-off is real: a marked note keeps working as money, but you have spent some of its future.
How this site tracks a note without marking it

The next person finds out the note is being tracked because someone tells them, or because they get curious and search — not because the note says so. It is a slower kind of spread, and it is the one that doesn't cost anyone a refund.
