Fancy serial numbers on rupee notes: solid, ladder, radar, 786

Collectors call a serial "fancy" when its six digits make a pattern. Every print run — one prefix, 10 lakh notes — contains a fixed, small number of each pattern, which is what makes them fun to find in change. When you enter a note here we check its digits and tag any pattern we find. This is the list.

Fancy number patterns and how rare they are

TagLooks likePer 10 lakh notes
Solid777777 — all six digits the same9
Ladder123456 or 654321 — consecutive digits, up or down10
Radar123321 — reads the same backwards, a palindrome1,000
Repeater123123 — second half repeats the first1,000
Low serial000001 to 000100100
Lucky 786any serial containing 786about 4,000
Millionth1000000 — the last note of the run, the only seven-digit serial1

The counts are per print run — one prefix, 10 lakh notes. A radar is a one-in-a-thousand find; a solid is nine in 10 lakh. A note can carry two tags: 786786 is both a repeater and a 786.

Is a 786 note worth lakhs?

786 is cherished across India as the numerical form of Bismillah, and notes carrying it have a following that predates the internet. They are also the most common "fancy" pattern by far — roughly one note in 250 contains the sequence somewhere — which is worth knowing before anyone tells you yours is rare.

What a fancy serial number is actually worth

Face value at the bank, and a little more to a collector who wants that exact pattern in crisp condition. That is the whole market. The "sell your 786 note for lakhs" posts are scams: they ask for a registration fee, a valuation fee, or an "RBI commission" and then vanish. The RBI has stated it does not buy, sell or value notes and never charges such fees. We tag patterns because finding one is a small event, not a payday, and every tag on this site is deliberately price-free.

Star and inset letter: not fancy numbers

Those are different things. A star marks a replacement note (star notes); an inset letter marks the press. Neither is a digit pattern. How the whole number panel fits together is in how to read the serial number.

Think you have one? Enter the serial — the tag shows up on the note's page.
